SPORT DIGEST: Soccer and league set to kick off, cricket champ announced
Around grounds
Douglas United is scheduled to kick off its season this Friday night at Port Douglas Sports Complex against Stratford Dolphins.
The Dragons have been promoted to Division One this year after beating the Dolphins in the Division Two Grand Final last season.
The word is they have been looking good on the track, but they will be facing tougher opposition this year, so will have to be on their game Friday night, weather permitting.
Cricket
All-rounder Cam Williams won the Muddies Cricket Club Champion’s Trophy at the presentation awards on Saturday after a strong year with both bat and ball.
Other major trophy winners on the day included Thirds team captain Adrian Bannerman, Doug Barnes and Fourths captain Shaun Anderson.
Rugby league
The Mossman Sharks are due to launch their season this Saturday away to Yarrabah Seahawks at Jilara Oval in Yarrabah.
AFL
Another trial game is scheduled for this Saturday at the Croc Pit in Port Douglas, this time against Cairns Saints.
There was no sign of any AFL last Saturday afternoon at the heavily waterlogged oval, and there is more weather on the way later this week, so keep an eye on the club’s social media for more possible updates.
Meanwhile, junior Croc Zac Moore spent last weekend in Townsville training with the Gold Coast Suns Academy Under-16s squad as he pursues his dream of being drafted into the AFL.
Male and female under-16s from across the region were at the training camp.
