SPORT DIGEST: Young Sharks fall just short, Dragons roar
Around grounds
The Mossman Sharks went down 28-32 to the Tully Tigers in a tight Far North Queensland Rugby League contest on Saturday evening in Mossman.
Tully got away to a fast start, but the Sharks hung in there throughout the match, with the result coming down to the kick conversions.
Both sides scored six tries, but the Tigers converted four, while the Sharks kicked two.
Young winger Elijah Wallis ran in three tries.
The Sharks will have a break for Easter, then play the Kangaroos at home at Coronation Park from 6pm on Saturday, April 11.
The Sharks women went down to Innisfail 0-42 on Friday night, while the reserves lost to Tully 18-44.
Soccer
Douglas United had an encouraging start to the Far North and Gulf Division One Community League campaign, beating Mareeba 4-2 at Mareeba.
The Dragons came out strong, moving the ball well, and shot out to a 2-0 lead within nine minutes.
Mareeba pulled one back in the 32nd minute after a goalkeeping error, but Douglas scored again two minutes later to go up 3-1.
Mareeba then fired home again before half time for a 3-2 scoreline at the break.
In the second half both sides were more sound defensively, but the Dragons broke the shackles in the 64th minute to give them a two-goal buffer, which they held onto to finish 4-2 at the final whistle.
Best players included centreback Ben Syrett, who kept a dangerous marksman quiet for most of the night with rock-solid defence, while Georges Laulhe and Daniele Cirani (two goals) were dangerous up front.
Cirani was sent off with five minutes to go.
Laulhe created numerous attacking opportunities and set up one himself, and picked up a yellow card also.
Douglas picked up multiple cards in a fiery clash at times, but Mareeba were given none.
Indoor golf
Matt and Joe have taken out the Grand Final of the Wet Season Indoor League with a convincing six and five win against Dave and Rhys.
Team Purple, as they have been nicknamed, played some spectacular golf with a few 300m drives and five birdies on the front nine at the difficult Pebble Beach course.
Birdies at 11, 12 and 13 helped secure the win.
Although Dave and Rhys played well through the season, they unfortunately didn't bring their best in the Grand Final, but the game was played in friendly spirits, and all had a great night.
The Indoor League will be starting again soon, and the Daddyshack is looking for more two-person ambrose teams to join in the fun.
