The Daintree Village public toilets near the riverfront are set to reopen in mid May, with repair works scheduled to begin tomorrow and take about a month to complete.

The Dagmar Street public toilet has been out of action for about two months after being “severely damaged” when a tree fell on the building in February.

But Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said this week works were scheduled to begin on Friday (April 17) and are due for completion in mid May.

On February 15, the toilet block was shut down and temporary fencing was erected around it.

“The impact caused structural damage to the roof trusses, ceilings, wiring and lighting, requiring replacement of the roofing iron and electrical components,” Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said.

“Materials have been ordered and Ergon Energy has been asked to disconnect power so work can begin safely.”

Daintree Village traders are concerned the public toilets have been out of action with the busy tourism season starting up.

There has been an influx of tourists to the region during Easter and the school holidays.
