Young people in Mossman are spearheading local celebrations for Queensland Youth Week, which runs from April 11 to 19. The local events are funded by a new state grant program designed and applied for by residents aged 12 to 25.

The local festivities are part of a broader initiative where the State Government, in partnership with the Queensland Mental Health Commission, awarded nearly $275,000 to support 33 youth-led projects across the state.

Under the program, young Queenslanders were eligible for grants of up to $10,000 to design and deliver events showcasing the talents of their peers.

Douglas Shire local Harper Woods, a local youth worker, spearheaded the application on behalf of Mossman Support Services.

While Youth Week features a diverse range of activities across Queensland, including a fitness program in Barcaldine and art activations at the Gold Coast University Hospital, the Mossman community has focused its efforts on a youth showcase and festival.

However, the marquee local event, “Light Up The Park – Youth Week”, has been rescheduled from its original date of Friday, April 17, due to ongoing weather uncertainty.

Organisers from the Mossman Support Services Youth Centre confirmed that while the event is postponed, a new date will be announced once finalised.

When it proceeds, the free community celebration will feature a showcase of music and speeches, alongside creative and recreational activities.

The planned program also includes live entertainment, new water activities, jumping castles, obstacle course, and attendance by local organisations and services providing information on the services they offer.

Minister for Youth Sam O’Connor stated that the initiative aims to empower the state’s next generation.

“Nearly one in five Queenslanders is aged 12 to 25, and these young people play an important role in shaping our state’s future,” Minister O’Connor said.
