Themed months on the drawing board for tourist focus
Shire tourism
A themed “seasonal series” monthly calendar of events is the latest idea by Douglas Shire traders and tourism-industry representatives to help promote the region.
Tourism Port Douglas Daintree, Douglas Rotary Club and local traders are behind the concept, described by the groups as a “practical way to encourage widespread participation”.
“The concept highlights a different theme each month, providing a flexible framework that businesses can easily align with and leverage through their own marketing,” the groups state.
Rotary chair Craig Schofield is helping coordinate the calendar and is inviting more retailers and operators to become involved.
“Rotary is passionate about initiatives that strengthen community involvement and local prosperity,” Mr Schofield said.
“As the new chair, I’m keen to re-energise Rotary activity in Port Douglas with a fresh and inclusive outlook.
“We’re excited about creating something businesses can easily plug into, and we’ll also explore relevant grant opportunities to support activation where possible.”
The theme for April is the Far North Queensland region-wide Tasting the Tropics food and drink festival.
May will centre around “Carnivale spirit”, with other themes discussed include celebrating local artists, wellbeing, “Spring is better up here,” and family-focused experiences.
A visitor map designed to encourage greater dispersal across the Shire is also being developed.
