The Raiders ran out victors in an entertaining Far North Queensland Rugby Union try-fest on Saturday evening, beating the Southside Crusaders 46-29 at home.

Port Douglas got away to a perfect start, with Kane Gray just planting the ball over the line through sheer grit and determination, much to the annoyance of his Southside opponent.

However, in an open and attacking game, the Crusaders continued to hit back with tries of their own.

But in the end they could not match the firepower of Port’s seven tries.

For the Raiders, try scorers also included three to Ryan Connors and one to Joe O’Leary, Rian O’Flynn and Jean Valette, while Luke Edwards converted four kicks.

This Saturday Port Douglas takes on the JCU Mariners at home from 5pm.

AFL Cairns

Three-time Richmond AFL premier Dustin Martin came to play on Saturday for Port Douglas in front of a big home crowd in the top-of-the-table clash with South Cairns Cutters, racking up multiple touches and two goals as the Crocs ran out comfortable 47-point winners.

When the final siren sounded, the scoreboard showed 16.11 (107) to 9.6 (60), but it took time for the Crocs to shake off a persistent Souths outfit, and the opposition never really gave up the whole game.

While Martin gave the team a big boost, the Crocs had winners across the whole ground, with recruit Shay Linke dangerous up forward with four goals and Liam Bartels racking up the touches again.

Other busy players included Jacob Zboril (3 goals), Jake Cook, Murphy Short and Ben McPhee.

Next Saturday the Crocs are back home against Cairns Saints.

In the women’s game, the Crocs jumped out of the blocks, leading for much of the first half, before being over-run by the Cutters, with the final score 2.4 (16) to 6.7 (43).

The women’s game starts at 10.15am on Saturday at Port Douglas oval.

The reserves team also had a good win, 10.7 (67) to 6.7 (43) and is currently sitting equal top on the ladder - a huge improvement on this time last year.

Soccer

The Douglas United Dragons had a hard-fought 3-2 win against Atherton at home on Friday night.

Taking the early lead with a well-taken penalty, the teams were back on level pegging when Atherton drilled one in the top corner of the northern net.

The Dragons started strongly after half-time, pushing out to a 3-1 lead after goals to experienced centre forward Christian Snel and Tyron Drumm.

But Atherton scored in the 80th minute to make the final few minutes more tense, with United hanging on for another win to add to a successful start to their promotion to Division One.

This Friday night the Dragons are away to Leichhardt.
