YOU SAID IT! A new lagoon vision
Letters and Comments
Jacqueline Funch
I mean it’s only been talked about for the last 25 years.
Hamish Melody
Would love to know how much money has been spent on lagoon drawings and plans over the years. Would probably be enough to build the lagoon.
Sue Perry
For tourism and local business it would be an absolute gamechanger as would have been the wave park.
Greg Carson
User pays, bed tax on accommodation to help with maintenance for it so it doesn’t fall solely on the residents, some of which may never use it. Just a thought, but it would certainly be a wonderful development.
Leanne Sparke
It’s a great idea but first give the town a facelift. Buildings badly need painting and updating. When’s the last time the pathways were pressure cleaned?
Leanne Walters
Would look beautiful and also be safe... other lagoons at Cairns and Airlie Beach really add something in my opinion as a traveller up to your gorgeous towns.
Chrissy Geyer
Please stop teasing. Talk, talk, talk. That's all that happens.
Jungle Juice takes a spin at political spin

Definitely a lot a political licence. The real figure for most residential areas just for general rates is between $188 and $340 and for properties with all services (water, sewerage and cleansing) between $300 and $700. Easy to see why the press release uses the median value rather than residential suburb by residential suburb data and examples. And if you are a pensioner add up to another $350 to these values - could be up to $1000 extra to find per year.
John Sullivan
Great work Terry. The Douglas Shire Ratepayers Association Inc with your help are crunching the numbers and will soon release a true reflection of the excessive rate rise.
Darryn Slade
Good article, but I think there are a lot of us who don't want a lot of the proposed projects which constitute a lot of the rate rises. For example, I certainly don't see the value in a lagoon when every hotel has a great pool, the Gorge is a unique experience, we have another public pool in Mossman, the creeks are so good to swim in and many homes have a pool as well.
Emergency funding disaster for Douglas Shire
Peter Kirchmann
It's definitely a pending sustainability issue.
Terence Paul
Infrastructure in case of cyclones on this road & Kuranda Range should have been in place decades ago. All reaction & no proaction.
Robyn Davies
Given it’s taking so long to make Jasper repairs, the Fed Gov has probably thought like the rest of us, enough is enough.
Doug Herrington
Amalgamate with Cairns again. We were much better off then.
Joshua Greenwood
Warren Entsch’s 3-way idea he pitched in 2024 was better idea. Kuranda and Port Douglas to become part of Cairns Regional Council, Mossman and Daintree to become part of Mareeba Shire, and then north of the Daintree River (Cow Bay, Cape Trib, etc) to become part of Cook Shire.
