Definitely a good target for Council to buy as a strategic park area. It would be a difficult block to develop, the seller is very motivated and the actual purchase/sale price should be quite low. Council 10% to 15% rate rises in suburban areas could at least be applied to a good purpose.

Imagine if St Mary’s by the Sea church and Market Park were under threat in Port Douglas. It would destroy the whole ambience of the town! This situation in Mossman should be treated equally in worth, as part of the Douglas Shire. It’s a landmark and part of the culture of our region.

Sue Garton

The community uses this area so much and the trees are iconic. Would the church make a nice restaurant or cafe and gallery? This should be a community asset.

Patricia Veschetti

The trees are part of Mossman and also St David's Church of England and they have been there for as long as I can remember as I used to go to Sunday school there in the early sixties. Leave things be.

Robyn Nelson

It's such a beautiful old church, with magnificent heritage stained-glass windows, a rows of ancient raintrees and lovely park area with adj playground, of course it should all be protected from future real estate destruction, the Douglas Shire Council or Qld Govt Heritage Trust should buy it and protect this at all costs.

Sharon Rowen

Agree with everyone wanting to keep. They are amazing. BUT. Just because you recommend the council to purchase them doesn’t make them forever safe.  Just saying.

Tony Croft

That would be like ripping the heart out of Mossman.

Margie Welham

There would be a public outcry, Cairns Freshwater community just tried taking a developer to court and they still lost but I think Council would not even allow our raintrees to go, they are iconic and the heart of Mossman holding so much history in their roots. They should be heritage listed and they must stay standing as a condition of sale.

Suzanne Robson

It is a tiny scrap of land, surely not of any commercial or residential use. If a Go Fund Me were set up to purchase it and then donate the land to Council I would donate.

Kim Clinton

If Council can't see the value of those trees to Mossman it will be a very sad day indeed.

Bill Smith

Mossman relies on tourism. Mossman is a beautiful town and those trees are one of its most beautiful attractions. All that sugar cane paddocks doing nothing and you want to ruin one of main attractions of the town. We need someone in this council that considers nature before money or progress as they call it.

Mossman’s raintrees in peril

It may not yet be generally known that the wondrous community of raintrees in Mossman are in peril.

These grand trees, where the attractive weekly markets are held, grow on land belonging to the northern diocese of the Anglican Church.  Church authorities are in need of a large amount of cash to compensate victims of sexual misconduct by Anglican priests. Consequently the market site, along with more properties in the north, is now in the hands of receivers, with sale by tender a fearful possibility.

Perhaps people of Mossman and all marketeers, indeed all residents of the Shire, will petition Douglas Shire Council to purchase the land for safekeeping of its beautiful trees and the important weekly market.

Good write-up. Even a game of soccer isn’t safe from the corrupt hands of that vile old orange pedo. Democracy has been bought and paid for by the highest bidder - Murdoch press and Zionist lobbyists set the agenda in the Western world now.

Expected nothing less from Crispin Hull.

I'll guess what he wrote instead of reading it. Trump is worse than the devil and the world is going to implode because of Trump, and Trump is worse than John Howard, And anyone or anything slightly right of the CCP are the problems.

Please seek urgent medical care you are suffering from TDS.

Today it took 2.5 hours from Cairns. 30 min at Mowbray.

Valerie Wall

Not one to complain but yes 30 minutes Port to Oak Beach. During peak holiday season. Was it necessary at this time I wonder?

The gift that keeps on giving. If you’re a TMR contractor.

The old blokes with their picks, shovels, dynamite, and dozers must be looking down in amazement at what takes place these days.

Annie Kavanagh

Oh come on, this is past a joke now. How many years? If this was Brisbane it would have been done but because we live up they don't care. What do our rates do, nothing, just keep going up?

Martin Juranovich

This is why we should get foreign tenders! Either it'll get done cheaper and quicker or these guys will pull their finger out.
