Upgrades to the Lower Daintree River floating walkway is “great news for the boaties” suggests Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon, even with some short partial closures of the boat ramp during construction.

The impact of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper and subsequent flooding events caused significant damage to the walkway, but it is now set for a stronger, safer rebuild.

Maritime Safety Queensland is upgrading the floating walkway, located at the Daintree Public Boat Ramp to restore access and improve flood resilience.

Among the upgrades are installation of flood-resistant flotation modules; new piles to support the structure; an extra metre of width to widen the walkway to 3.5 metres; and dual-sided berthing to make it easier to use.

The works are scheduled for a late August start and are planned for completion by December, weather and site conditions permitting.
