SPORT DIGEST: AFL best-and-fairest awards announced at glittering ceremony

Ruckman Tom Cantwell won a thrilling Port Douglas Crocs best-and-fairest count on Friday night from new gun forward Shay Linke, while Ella Jones beat out captain Caity McPhee in an equally enthralling women’s team vote.
Sam Wall won the reserves best and fairest, while Linke was crowned leading goalkicker.
The club players-of-the-year awards went to captain Ben McPhee and Georgia Walker, while midfielder Murphy Short was awarded the most courageous trophy.
Former Adelaide Crow Jared Petrenko won the best-in-finals gong for his brilliant display in all three games played, young gun Zayne Moore was named the team's best defender and McPhee was named the men’s most determined.
For the women, Daisy Quilter was most improved, Kristie Hynes was most consistent, Hayley Nash won the coach's award, Kirra Revell was most courageous and Hannah Gullane was the best first-year player.
Club person of the year went to Greg Herring.
The glittering ceremony was held in front of more than 100 people at the Oaks resort in Port Douglas on Friday, September 25, with everyone in high spirits after the club snared the 2026 senior men's and reserves flags the weekend before.
Cricket
The Muddies Fourths were easily beaten by Atherton away on Sunday.
After losing the toss, Douglas were sent in to bowl, with the opposition openers getting away to a fast start.
Atherton made 8/212 in their allotted 35 overs, with Simeon Miglioranza taking 3/43 from seven overs.
In the chase, the Muddies were dismissed for 77 in the 20th over, with Miglioranza top scoring with the bat with 31.
Both Muddies teams have a bye this weekend.
