Port Douglas Calcutta returns after $43,550 debut
Community spirit
The Port Douglas Melbourne Cup Calcutta will return on Monday, November 2, after its inaugural event generated $43,550 in ticket sales and auction proceeds, including $7,042 for the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club.
Organisers are seeking local businesses to join as major sponsors for 2026, with plans to build on last year’s turnout and improve the event using feedback from those who attended.
The first Calcutta opened with $17,500 in ticket sales before the horse auction added another $26,050. Proceeds funded prizes and a contribution to the club’s volunteer lifesaving work.
Committee member Callum Jones said the response exceeded expectations.
“The event grew well beyond our initial expectation and was incredibly well supported,” Mr Jones said.
“It really shows how great our community is. With so many charitable functions held across the shire, having the support of local businesses is what made this possible.”
This year, the committee hopes to strengthen those business connections and increase the event’s contribution to the community.
Sponsorship offers local businesses a chance to support a community event while backing the volunteers who help keep Port Douglas beaches safe.
With preparations underway for the Melbourne Cup eve fundraiser, organisers are keen to hear from businesses interested in getting involved.
