Strings set to echo through one of nature's most beautiful amphitheatres
Free concert
Listening to live cello and harp surrounded by the oldest wet tropical rainforest in the world is something many can only dream of - but Far North Queensland locals will soon have the opportunity for free.
Renowned cellists Alison Smith O’Connell and Dr Danielle Bentley, as well as popular harpist and singer Loni Fitzpatrick, will be staging a free concert in Diwan next month organised by the Daintree Marketing Co-op.
“The event was inspired by the recent Daintree floods, and aims to lift the spirits of the community while showcasing the region to locals and beyond,” DMC spokeswoman Vivienne Stefanutti says.
“We wanted to lift the spirits of our community after the recent floods, and bring joy, world-class music and a great festival feel to the Daintree.”
Smith O’Connell is a core member of Queensland chamber orchestra Camerata, and also plays with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Bentley is an award-winning cellist who has performed with Opera Australia and Queensland Ballet and collaborated with more than 100 major artists, and Fitzpatrick is one of Australia’s most sought-after harpists.
The trio will play a “joyful program of classical and contemporary pieces” during the event.
There will also be market stalls, food stalls, roving performers and other activities.
The event is funded by the Federal Government through the North Queensland Resilience Program and is supported by Douglas Shire Council.
Echoes of the Daintree is on at Alexandra Bay Sporting Club, Diwan, on Saturday, November 28, 3-6pm.
Douglas Shire residents and other FNQ residents with a Douglas Card can ride the Daintree Ferry for free.
