Popular crocodile-spotting bridge shutting for repair works
Mowbray tourism
The crocodile lookout at the Mowbray River will be closed to tourists from early this month to the end of September while the bridge undergoes repairs.
Repair crews will be working on the viewing platform, the western end of the bridge and the rock wall on the riverbank.
Visitors will still be able to access the pedestrian underpass beneath the bridge.
There will also be some delays for drivers, including lower speed limits.
A heavy vehicle turnaround will also be in place in the carpark with traffic controls.
The bridge is a popular spot for travellers to visit in order to catch a glimpse of at least two crocodiles that frequent the Mowbray River region.
A Far North Queensland small business owner captured some stunning drone footage of them sunning themselves on the river bank last year.
Tim Sparks, who lives in Cairns but visits Douglas Shire regularly for his work as a pressure cleaner, found the pair of crocs together on the banks of the river.
Tim told Newsport one of the crocs was well over 3m, while the other was looking happy to keep their distance from the other dominant male.
Travellers are reminded to stay CrocWise in FNQ waterways.
