BREAKING BARRIERS: Mossman’s Kirsty Burchill shines at Australian women music awards
SUCCESS STORY

“Never stop chasing your dreams”- these were the words of Kirsty Burchill as she departed her hometown Mossman earlier this year to pursue her music career in Melbourne. A journey that’s already bearing fruit with her recent selection for the Australian Women Music Awards, recognising her musical talent.
As one of the Queensland Regional & Remote Women’s Music Program’s eight beneficiaries, Ms Burchill’s selection underscores the program’s mission to make the music industry more accessible for women facing distance and gender-related obstacles.
As part of the program, Ms Burchill participated in forums, discussions, and networking sessions with the other seven women to advance their music careers.
Reflecting on her experience, Ms Burchill shared, “Honestly, I forgot I applied. Then, when I was notified, I was thrilled and had to reach out to inquire about my prize”.
“Small-town girl, unaware of such opportunities, and then being told I was going to see the likes of Dami Im and Vanvessa Amorrosi perform as well as listening to their journeys through music. It has been a wild journey.
“It was great to connect with other aspiring artists who share the same struggles and passion for music. I even formed a close bond with Jimmy Barnes’ daughter.
“We bonded over our love for Lord of the Rings. I tend to feel a bit socially awkward around remarkable women in the music industry but I believe she could tell that I'm genuinely engaged in conversation.”
‘No is Yes, just not yet’
During her two-day participation in the program Ms Burchill gained some invaluable insights.
“I wrote down a few meaningful sayings: ‘No is Yes, just not yet’, ‘you don't know your strengths until you know your weaknesses’, and 'there is no growth in stagnant water; you need it to rain’.
“Everyone faces pain and struggles, it is how you use them to improve yourself and your dreams.
“Vanessa Amorossi spoke of her struggles and her no’s and how it fueled her fire to press on. I resonate with this because I’m a bit stubborn and I’ve heard ‘no’ countless times.
“I have been told ‘no’ from Australian Idol and The Voice and the reaction I get from people is often why. My response is ‘not yet’, and I believe my path to growth lies elsewhere.”
Exciting things ahead
When asked what is on the horizon, Ms Burchill eagerly shared that she’s currently in the process of recording an EP, set for release next year under her artist name Kaybee.
“I am collaborating with two beautiful producers; Eddxeonthetrack who is known for his pop and R&B influence and pushes me out of my comfort zone, and Jimmyharwood who is an absolute blessing to my music.
“This year, I’ve chosen to focus on creating a solid body of work, which means I won’t be performing live, except for a special December performance with my incredible Yalanji sister, Keeahn, who’s an amazing artist in Melbourne.
“Furthermore, there’s an exciting event on the horizon for next year, but I’ll keep the details under wraps for now.”
