The highly anticipated Salsa Sorensen Charity Golf Day returns on Sunday 22 August and the annual favourite has some exciting changes for 2021!

Last year’s tournament was scaled back due to Covid after organisers decided it wasn’t a good time to ask for donations from the community.

To mark the return of the event this year, organisers have reverted to the old format and introduced a $20,000 cash prize for anyone that scores a hole in one on the 15th hole par 3.

Tournament organiser Jenni Sorensen is excited about this year’s tournament and says the par 3 cash prize should be a big drawcard to get people involved.

“It’s going to be another fantastic postcard perfect August day in Port and you’ve got to be in it to win it!” Sorensen said.

The tournament has raised over $140,000 since its inception in 2009, the proceeds of which go back into the local community through various projects and in 2019 the event raised $22,500 for local groups.

Submissions for funding for this year’s event are open and local community not-for-profits, sporting and charity groups are encouraged to apply for grants of $500 - $2000.

After last year’s strange format tournament organisers have expanded the event to allow up to 48 teams to enter, making it the largest 4-ball Ambrose tournament in the tropical north this year.

Sorensen founded the Brian Sorensen Cup 13 years ago in honour of her late husband – a local legend – who passed in 2008. In 2014 the event was amalgamated into the Salsa Sorensen Charity Golf Day.

“We’re expecting a big turnout and already we’ve got lots of team registrations. The 7:30 shotgun tee off is the only slot left available so anyone who’d like to be involved in a fun day out should get a team together and register while they still can,” she said.

“There’s still time for local groups to apply for funding so if your community needs funding for something, get on the website and tell us about it.

Price is $100 for Palmer Sea Reef members or $150 for non-members and includes a light lunch, golf cart, stubby cooler, hat and ‘build your own burger’ dinner from 5pm.
