The Captain Cook Highway has reopened after the road, just north of the Port Douglas turn off, was closed earlier today as the Forensic Crash Unit investigated Tuesday's serious two-vehicle traffic crash.

A 69-year-old woman, who was airlifted to Cairns after sustaining serious head and chest injuries, is now in a stable condition in hospital following the crash which occurred at approximately 3:30pm on Tuesday when a sedan and utility collided.

Five other occupants involved in the crash; three men in their 70s, a woman in her 70s, and a man in his 60s, were taken to hospital by ambulance to be treated for minor injuries.

Senior Constable Matt Cornish said police were on the scene of the incident again today to examine the site, which caused minor traffic delays.

“They [the Forensic Crash Unit] closed the road temporarily to survey the road with a drone,” he said.

“It is all open now.”

The investigation into what caused the crash is ongoing, however, Constable Cornish said one of the vehicles sustained damage to its front while one has damage to its side.

The occupants of one vehicle were removed after emergency services were forced to cut the roof off the vehicle.

Major delays were felt by motorists with the highway restricted to one lane for a number of hours following the crash.
