Did someone say COLOUR?! And WATER HOSES?! And LAUGHTER?!

Students at Port Douglas State School (PDSS) experienced an afternoon of pure joy and laughter last Friday as the kids, teachers and parents embraced the water, mud, colour and chaos that is the Colour Explosion Fun 4 Run.

Also known as the ‘Brightest Day of the School Year’, the fundraising event was held by the school’s P&C Association on the school sports oval with the entire school participating to help raise funds to subsidise the school’s most important PE curriculum, the two week ‘Learn to Swim’ program in Term 4.

The air was filled with colour and laughter as students navigated the eventful obstacle course numerous times – crawling under, weaving through, jumping over, slipping and sliding, being sprayed by firies’ hoses and sprayed by colourful powder.

Starting out with crisp white t-shirts and kitted out by colourful headbands and fluoro framed sunglasses, by the end of the day, they were covered head to toe with all the colours of the rainbow – red, yellow, pink and green … purple, orange and blue.

The community spirit of the day was strong, supported by both the Port Douglas firies who brought their truck and ensured the runners were super wet as well as the Port Douglas Police, who helped by shooting water guns on the students.

School Principal Doug Barnes said the Fun Run was always a highlight of the year and Friday’s event was the conclusion to a massive fundraising effort by so many classes and students over several weeks.

“Some of our students have done bake sales, made collection tins and beautiful posters outside their parents’ places of business whilst some kids have done drawings and made crafts for donations from friends and family,” he said.

“Well done class 1/2 SL who earned themselves free icy blocks for their outstanding fundraising efforts as a whole class.”

P&C Association President, Janice Ruffles said the day was a huge success, but more funds are always needed to support the school being the best it can be and the students.

“The Colour Explosion Fun Run is always a hugely popular fundraising event and the kids love it. Next fundraising event on our calendar is an ‘adults only’ night out to be held on the 12th of August at the Clink Theatre. Our annual ‘The Great Debate’, where the parents team go head-to-head with the teacher’s team is always a great night out. Tickets will be on sale soon through the Clink Theatre,” she said.

Donations to the Port Douglas State School P&C Association may be made anytime through the course of the year and are always much appreciated.
