The Crocs and Hawks contest the ball during their clash.

A commanding second quarter effort helped Port Douglas to a percentage boosting win against Manunda Hawks at Cazalys.

In searing afternoon sunshine Port’s nine goal to zero second term propelled Brad Cooper’s men to a 62-point buffer at the main break (82-24) and from there they were never headed on the way to an eventual 95-point, 145-50 win.

With perennial target Kye Chapple proving a focal target up forward, ex Port Power player Nick Salter (five goals) an equally dangerous proposition in front of goals and Josh Mawson getting plenty of the pill the Crocs had too many weapons for a Hawks team that tried hard but were simply outclassed.

“There’s no easy matches in the competition which is great,” Cooper told Newsport from the boundary line at Cazalys.

“We had to make sure we won the contested footy and play to our advantages a bit, which was our height across the park.

“We weren’t pleased with our last performance (close loss to Lions) and we wanted to make amends today and I thought we did that.”

Port had a host of solid ball winners including Liam Brandt, Harvey Moore and Jayden White.

In the match of the round Cairns City Lions trounced South Cairns Cutters 142-38.

FNQ Rugby this week

Meantime in CDRL action Mossman trailed Yarrabah 10-0 early before the home team hit back to lead 12-10 before eventually doing enough to secure a 38-26 win at Coronation Park.

Matthew Gibuma, David Nona, Aaron Daniel, and Kalani Anau were amongst the try scorers for Mossman.

The final margin is a little deceiving as Mossman scored six tries to five and the score line would have been closer had Yarrabah kicked more of their conversions.

Lastly in FNQ Rugby, the Raiders were unable to secure a win on the road going down to Brothers 46-17 at Stan Williams Park. Port Douglas faces powerhouse JCU on Saturday afternoon at Raider Park.
