No injuries as emergency services personnel attend to morning gas leak in Port Douglas

2.12PM: A local fire expert has just confirmed with us the gas leak has been located, contained and that local streets across the Port Douglas CDB are starting to open up again.

A host of locals and tourists continue to wait along parts of Macrossan St as Fire and other expert personnel work to contain a gas leak that was first reported coming from near the Port Douglas Coles car park area just after 9.30am this morning.

Parts of Grant St, Warner St and Macrossan St remain cordoned off leaving many patrons unable to collect their cars and return home around the Douglas Shire, to Cairns airport and other locations.

A host of guests at various resorts and hotels in the Port Douglas CBD were asked to evacuate their premises between 10-10.30am in a bid to avoid being directly effected by the ongoing leak.

A host of Port Douglas businesses like Fresq and others remain directly effected by the unfolding situation with a number having to close their doors for Sunday trade until the gas threat is resolved.

A QPS spokesperson told Newsport fire units and other personnel continue to attend to the leak and it remains unclear just how long local streets will remain cordoned off.

A number of Police units from Cairns are also on scene as the situation continues to unfold.

The cause of the gas leak still remains unknown.

10am: Local emergency personnel continue to respond to a confirmed gas leak at Port Village shopping centre in Port Douglas.

As Douglas Shire and many Far North residents continue to enjoy Carnivale a Queensland Ambulance spokesperson just moments ago confirmed with Newsport that Police, Fire and Ambulance units were called to the centre just after 9.48am to attend to the leak.

The QAS spokesperson confirmed no members of the community have been directly effected, and that ambulance units remain on scene purely for precautionary purposes.
