Five people, including children, have had a lucky escape after a Cooya Beach home caught alight last night.

Emergency services responded to a structure fire on Thooleer Close at 7:00pm on Sunday night.

A QFES spokesperson said three fire crews worked on the scene of a single-story house which was “well alight” when they arrived.

“When crews arrived, there was a large amount of smoke coming from the roof,” the spokesperson said.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said the fire was being treated as non-suspicions with an initial investigation revealing it was most likely started by an electrical fault.

“There were five people in the house at the time, four children and a woman,” the spokeswoman said.

“They were not injured and managed to get out after hearing the smoke alarm."

Fire crews also worked to protect the surrounding properties with the fire fully extinguished by 7:45pm. Crews remained on sight to assess and ventilate the property until close to 10:00pm.

A neighbour said the fire was extremely smoky but praised the efforts of the emergency serves who she said got the fire under control quickly.
