Two people were taken to hospital after an alleged assault on Macrossan Street in Port Douglas on Tuesday night.

Paramedics responded to the alleged assault at 8:34pm after a verbal altercation between a group of people at a licenced venue turned violent.

Two patients sustained facial injuries and were transported to Mossman Hospital, both in stable conditions.

Port Douglas Police Sergeant, Damian Meadows, said police are currently viewing CCTV footage and are investigating the incident.

“It appears the altercation began between two separate groups, a group of four and a group of two,” he said.

“Queensland Ambulance attended to treat a couple of people involved."

Sgt Meadows said police strongly do not condone any form of alcohol-fuelled violence.

“People need to keep their emotion in check, these types of altercations can easily escalate to a one-punch type of incident where lives could be at risk.

“Incidents like this are certainly not a common thing for Port Douglas but when it does happen it is very disappointing.”

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
