The opening act of Port Douglas Carnivale, Wonderland Spiegeltent kicks off in Port Douglas tonight.

The opening show, Popcorn Underground, starring Reuben Kaye, is the first of four Wonderland Spiegeltent shows and will run through to May 22.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr described the Wonderland Spiegeltent opening act as a heady mix of cabaret, adult sideshow, burlesque, magic, astounding circus and extraordinary artists, designed to entertain and seduce Port Douglas audiences.

“The Spiegeltent is a luxurious and exciting setting for some of the most unique and exhilarating performances to be seen in Tropical North Queensland,” he said.

The venue will also host the very adult Blunderland – Late Night Show “served hot and ready to dazzle” and the very family friendly The Greatest Magic Show, which is headed to Queensland for the very first time.

In a special one-off show acclaimed Australian artist, Tex Perkins and Matt Walker will perform for one night only on Saturday, May 15.

“It is a coup for Port Douglas Carnivale to have someone of Tex Perkin’s calibre performing and just know audiences will love this exclusive, intimate and acoustic performance,” Mayor Kerr added.

The 26th Port Douglas Carnivale celebration runs from May 21 to 23 and is packed with festive entertainment. There are more than 20 events this year and 25 live music shows.

Many of the events are free and there are special events for children so the whole family can join in the fun.

The headline act for the big Saturday night Tropic Rock concert is Spiderbait.

“Port Douglas Carnivale is the social event of the year,” Mayor Kerr added. “It is a great weekend, with some fantastic free and ticketed events.”

Following on from its success in 2019, the Paws and Claws Gala event returns with a long luncheon at Zinc Restaurant.

With a theme of Tropic & Exotic, the Property Shop Street Parade on Friday, May 21 is set to excite.

Carnivale this year also features an exhibition by Tim Ellis at the Sugar Wharf, and the Douglas Photographic Society at Port Douglas Community Hall.
