Two years of heartbreak, pain, frustration and uncertainty caused by the COVID pandemic has been washed away in a mere four days as Port Douglas returned to its former glory over the recent easter holiday period.

Local hotels were at full occupancy, pubs and clubs couldn’t keep up with orders and tour companies had to delay bookings as the town buzzed with thousands of interstate visitors ready to put the pandemic aside to enjoy everything our region has to offer.

“It’s been absolutely crazy,” Central Hotel duty manager Macarena Ramos told Newsport.

“It’s been amazing to see so many families and tourists back in Port Douglas.

“We’ve been run off our feet at the hotel, with all services regularly full.

“We’ve been quiet for so long; it’s tiring, but it’s very nice, everyone has been waiting to see so many people travelling again.

“It feels like there is optimism again.”

Staff at a local accommodation outlet was equally optimistic.

“It’s been incredible, it is sensational to see the town buzzing again,” a representative from Club Tropical Resort said.

“We’ve had people from right across the country stay with us over the past few days and all are saying how amazing it is to get out and travel again.

“They are telling us they are loving spending time in Port Douglas.”

Meantime, in another positive development road users did the right thing across the break.

“I’m really pleased to report we had no major issues on our roads over Easter,” Senior Sergeant and Officer-in-Charge of Douglas Police Station Damian Meadows said.

“I’m really impressed; we had a real visual presence on the local roads and for the most part road behaviour, in general, was excellent.”
