Each week I will be summing up the events, achievements and news from the schools that make our region great. If you have anything you would like covered, please contact me at [email protected].

The Douglas Shire has students that shine not only in classrooms but on the track, dance studios, football field and so many other areas and arenas.

Daintree State School

Schools across the country marked Book Week and the dress up was a total hit at DSS.

With guest appearances from SpongeBob, Wally, Cinderella, Bob the Builder, Little Red Riding Hood, Mrs Wishy Washy and so many more celebrities, it was so much fun!

This is awesome to see! Keep it up teachers and students alike!

Miallo State School

Port Douglas, Julatten, Mossman, Daintree, Wonga, Alexandra Bay and St Augustines travelled to MSS for the District Ball Games.

Great sportsmanship and teamwork shown by all – which is great to see!

Year 6 were able to raise over $600 by selling baked goods which will go towards their Low Isles trip.

Miallo took out Overall Winning school and Daintree as Aggregate winner.

Miss Jenny, Charlotte, Miss Hiromi, and visiting instrumental music teachers provided an intensive two-day music camp for 25 selected instrumental music students. They learnt eight new songs and performed many of these on the second day for their parents, visiting Principal and the whole-school.

Mossman State School

Next Tuesday a number of our classes will participate in a public awareness program about Deadly Australians, educating the children about the dangers of the venomous wildlife that inhabit our suburban backyards, bush, beaches and sea. The program uses both live and preserved exhibits with extensive use of visual aids to stay both interesting and informative.

On Thursday, some of the school’s P-6A students will be participating in the All Abilities Sports Day at Barlow Park in Cairns. There are lots of sporting activities on offer, including AFL, hockey, NRL, rugby union, tennis, golf, netball, cricket, soccer, long jump, vortex throwing, shot put, bowls and tenpin bowling! What a wonderful opportunity for these kids!

Wonga Beach State School

The school had their STEM’s fair and it was a huge success as Naomi Arthurson told Newsport.

“The students did a spectacular job with their exbibits,” Ms Arthurson said.

“We are extremely proud of the individual efforts that went into each of the displays and it made it extremely difficult to pick winners however our guests voted and the winners were announced.

“It was an honour to have Mossman High School as part of the afternoon and their science investigation and arcade game were extremely popular.”

Plans are already underway for a 2023 Fair after the positive feedback and received.

The winners for the event with the most votes from the audience were:

Year 1-2

Winner: Elvis & his volcano
Runner Up: Daniel with his bean hotel

Year 3-4

Winner: Aiden C & his 3D pen lifecycle
Runner Up: Alyssa & her sunflower lifecycle display

Year 5-6

Winner: Kaydee & her sound exhibit
Runner Up: Kayla & her biomass energy

The school has their bumper Community Market Day on Saturday 27th August running from 2pm-6pm with loads of food, bar, refreshments and markets to grab a bargain! Support their P&C doing great work.
