Balls flew with racquets up as the Mossman Squash and Tennis Club had their Adult Club Championships on the weekend.

Organiser Rob Borzi spoke to Newsport about the event and gave us the review of the day.

“It was a great event which saw some high-quality tennis played under blue skies,” he said.

“The Men's singles competition was hotly contested with a number of very close matches between four competitors.”

The four competitors each brought differed styles and weapons to their game.

The tenacious Dan Frieling is known for possessing an accurate drop shot, a looping forehand and a strong serve.

The defending champion and organiser himself, Rob Borzi, possessing a powerful serve, a slicing backhand and court speed.

Mark Barnes, a tall customer with a long reach, dependable net play, and a chip shot which often catches opponents unaware.

The final competitor was Herold Prins, a previous champion with real European tennis pedigree, who possesses textbook technique, a strong serve and an excellent drop shot.

Frieling started strongly against Borzi, and he was off to an early 2-0 lead, before Borzi got back into the match and they continued to go game for game until Borzi broke serve to go ahead 5-4 before serving it out.

Borzi’s next opponent was Barnes, who have competed against each other before, but it was Borzi taking this match with a score line of 6-1

Frieling got the chance to line up against Barnes in a very competitive match, with Frieling winning 6-4.

Pins started strongly against Borzi in their match getting off to a 5-2 lead before Borzi got back to 4-5 before Pins took the match 6-4.

Frieling took on Pins with the latter continuing his winning run with a match finishing in his favour 6-0.

The final match saw Barnes take on Pins with Barnes getting out to an early 2-0 lead and continued strongly while Pins changed tactics to eventually win 6-3.

Herold Pins was named the 2022 MSTC Adult Male Singles Club Champion finishing on 18 points; Rob Borzi (16), Dan Barnes (10), Mark Frieling rounding out the other placings.

As is the case with all sports withdrawals came following injuries which forced the doubles pairings to be pulled from a hat, but the competition was still fierce.

The doubles tournament ended up being played out between Rob Borzi and Mark Barnes taking on Michelle Teasdale and Dan Barnes.

Michelle is known for being armed with a powerful serve, a great tennis brain and a killer backhand which places her well in any tournament.

Using her huge serve she would take out the first game before a passage of rallies and the partnership of Barnes and Borzi went ahead 5-1 eventually taking out the first set 6-3.

The second set saw them race away to an early 3-0 lead before Frieling and Teasedale got back into it with a strong service game from Frieling.

Borzi and Barnes regrouped and using the full court to the best of their ability and passing shots made the opposition team struggle to deliver anything in return with Rob Borzi and Mark Barnes winning the second set 6-3 and taking out the MSTC Doubles Championship.

The Club will be holding their junior championships next month and we can only hope the competition and passion levels will be just as high.
