Exploring the tales of individuals who discovered their path to our secluded corner of the world never fails to pique our interest. Meet Greg Cete, a local accountant and partner at Williams Cete & Co.

Mr Cete’s story unfolds intriguingly, born in South Africa, raised in the picturesque landscapes of Portugal, and finally embarking on an educational journey that led him to Sydney.

The decision to get into accounting is another interesting story. “I just kind of fell into it,” Mr Cete recalls.

Initially aiming for a business degree, Mr Cete discovered his passion for accounting during a TAFE certification, leading to an advanced diploma studies and a Bachelor of Commerce with an accounting major.

Efficient expertise

Mr Cete takes great satisfaction in assisting Non-For-Profit (NFP) organisations with their annual audits.

“For these organisations, audits are crucial as they often need them for renewing their annual NFP status. I take pride in supporting them through this process.”

Additionally, Mr Cete specialises in assisting clients with Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSFs), ensuring tax compliance and offering guidance on optimising tax outcomes.

“I find great fulfilment in getting the best tax outcomes for clients, especially in scenarios like using SMSFs for property purchases that contribute to retirement funds.

“Our goal is optimal outcomes, including tax reduction and strategies for tax-free super payments, within regulatory boundaries.

“I enjoy guiding clients through the intricacies of accounting systems that can sometimes appear overwhelming. Explaining accounting concepts, like debits, credits, and related notions, feels natural to me.”

90-years and ac-counting

Mr Cete also places a strong emphasis on fostering enduring relationships with the firm’s clients.

Since its inception in 1933, the firm has been dedicated to providing exceptional accounting and tax services to the Douglas Shire and its surrounding areas.

“We have long-term clients spanning over 30 years, and our focus with new clients is to establish enduring relationships that can last decades more,’ Mr Cete said.

His wife's 15-year tenure in the area, along with her employment at Far Northern Milling, has enriched his understanding of the region, including insights into the sugar industry.

“I get to understand a whole lot more on how the sugar industry works which in turn helps me help my clients in the best way possible.

“Mitch has extensive experience here and is well-versed in the local area. Plus, a majority of our team comes from this region. I believe these factors distinguish us from others.”
