There’s no doubt that the love for canines runs deep in the Douglas Shire and a well-behaved dog is important for many. With a reputation for guiding furry friends towards good behaviour one name stands out: Michelle Blackman from Port Paws Dog Training.

With her arsenal of dog training programs, group training classes, and private lessons, Michelle isn't just another dog trainer; she’s a beacon of hope for those grappling with behavioural issues in their beloved pets.

Michelle’s journey into the world of dog training started with her own dog’s aggression issues. This prompted her to delve deeply into understanding dog behaviour and psychology, eventually leading her to pursue a career as a dog trainer.

“Once I started to delve down the route of this research side of things I got hooked,” Michelle explained.

Armed with a certificate 3 in dog training and behaviour, Michelle has spent the last three years travelling the country, attending seminars, and apprenticing under renowned dog trainers. She’s currently engaged in ANCK agility competitions while refining her obedience and mondio ring skills with her loyal canine companions.

Contrary to common belief, Michelle emphasised that training is not just for dogs with behavioural issues or puppies.

"Dogs require continuous training, they’re never too old to learn or improve,” she added. “Just like us, they have both physical and mental needs. Neglecting either can lead to behaviour problems and dogs feeling unfulfilled.”

Her group classes accommodate dogs of all ages, with even well-behaved dogs benefiting from socialisation and mental stimulation. “I recommend group classes for every dog, but there may be exceptions,” she explained.

In addition to group sessions, Michelle provides private consultations tailored to address various dog training requirements,  including obedience, house manners and behaviour modification.

“If you’re dealing with issues at home, with other dogs, or with people, I’ll come to you for an initial consultation, which usually lasts about an hour and a half,” she explained.

“During this session, we discuss the problems you’ve been facing and develop a plan to address them. Depending on the severity of the issue and the level of assistance you require, I provide training packages tailored to your needs.”

Michelle emphasised that dog training is not just for the dog; it’s also for the owner.

“My primary goal is to teach people how to effectively communicate with their dogs and build a two-way relationship. Understanding your dog and fostering a strong relationship are key aspects of my training philosophy.”

Her approach starts with establishing a solid relationship foundation and building the dog’s confidence. Then, specific issues like leash walking and social interactions can be addressed.

“Consistency is essential in dog training for maintaining their skills. So, my advice to those considering dog training is to prioritise consistency in training efforts for optimal results.”

Beyond training, Michelle also offers a range of high-quality leashes and collars designed to enhance the outdoor experience for dogs and their owners. "Our extra-long leashes are perfect for beach outings, providing both freedom and safety for dogs during walks,” she explained.

Witnessing the progress and transformation in her clients is a source of great satisfaction for Michelle. "It's heartening when clients actively engage in the process and seeing it alleviates the client’s stress associated with their dog's behaviour challenges.”
