One of the Shire’s more anticipated projects established with the sole intention to ease the region’s ongoing accommodation crisis and benefit the local economy is now a welcomed reality.

The Exchange Hotel and Backpacker Resort at two Front St Mossman opened its doors to guests just days ago.

The driving force behind The Exchange's new life is Nathan Bonneau- Plassa who simply wanted to do his bit to somewhat ease the accommodation crisis that continues to affect many residents in the Douglas Shire.

"I'm really excited by this project," Mr Bonneau-Plassa told Newsport during a walkthrough of the venue this morning.

"It's really important there are options for backpackers and locals to stay in the Shire - we've received a lot of support and we're really delighted the backpackers is finally open."

The opening of the facility means local hospitality workers and others needing an affordable short/longer term accommodation option can at least consider the Exchange resort, particularly in the wake of the future closure of Dougies Backpackers Resort and Pandanus Caravan Park.

Mr Bonneau-Plassa reiterated backpackers that live and work in the Douglas Shire and are making an ongoing contribution to the region and locals in need of an affordable option will be given immediate priority and first preference over potential interstate guests wanting to stay and utilise it as a base for their holiday/travels.

And, so far so good – the phone hasn’t stopped ringing - the interest online has also been second to none.
