Two months of nightworks confirmed for the Captain Cook Highway get underway tonight in a bid to speed up ongoing repairs and improvements to the busy stretch of road in the wake of damage caused by Jasper and the following rain event.

As Newsport revealed last week the Captain Cook Highway will be closed to all traffic for the works between Rex Lookout and Turtle Cove from tonight Wednesday, May 15, between 9pm-4am each night until late July. Single lane traffic will be let through twice per night, first at 11pm and then 1.30am.

The Department of Transport (TMR) told Newsport the purpose of the works is to stabilise slopes in preparation of more permanent, future works to the Highway.

A reminder the Captain Cook Highway will be OPEN all night on the following dates to ensure local events can still be held.

Friday May 24 - May 26 (Port Douglas Carnivale)

Saturday June 1

Saturday June 8

Saturday June 15 (IRONMAN)

Sunday June 16 (IRONMAN)

Saturday June 22

Saturday June 29

Saturday July 6
