Queensland Health is encouraging people to stay vigilant about hygiene after a spike in flu numbers across the state.

Reported flu cases across the state have hit their highest level for the year, and Queensland Health is warning the number has not yet peaked.

About 3650 flu cases were recorded from Monday, July 14, to Sunday, July 20, with the total number of cases 13 per cent higher than at the same time last year.

“This is the highest number of flu cases recorded in a single week this year to date,” QH states.

“Flu cases and hospitalisations are likely to continue to increase in coming weeks, with the peak yet to be reached.”

There have been more than 90 flu-related deaths this year, with more than 3900 people hospitalised with flu since the start of the year.

This year to date, Queensland has recorded more than 39,900 flu cases, while about 35,200 cases were recorded up to July 20 last year - a 13 per cent increase.

And 88 per cent of flu patients admitted to hospital were not vaccinated.

Queenslanders can book in for a free flu vaccination at GPs, community pharmacies and community clinics, and can have a Covid-19 booster at the same time.

More than 180 people were hospitalised with Covid in Queensland last week and close to 2000 cases were reported.

More than 25,000 cases have been recorded this year.

QH is reminding people to use good hygiene such as washing hands, covering up coughs and sneezes and staying at home when you are sick.
