Port Douglas Pool Competition has a new president, and he has come full circle in the competition as one of its original founders.

Broz Jurie has taken back the reins of the sport locally with a vision to build it back up towards its former glory.

He instigated the Port Douglas Pool Competition with his wife Dot in 1989, starting out with four teams.

“The Sheraton Mirage was being built and that went on for three years with workers doing their village,’’ Mr Jurie said.

“And many were keen pool players. The competition went from four teams to six, then to eight, then 10 very quickly.

“At a point we had 16 teams for two years and the population of the town was only 400.”

Mr Jurie was president over the course of 18 years and says that since he departed the role there had been five presidents fill the job.

“I have taken over to get it on the right track,’’ he said.

In 2025, the competition had six teams with the top sides playing off recently in grand finals for two divisions. Club Mossman took the Division 1 title against Reef Tavern and Mr Jurie’s Rattle N Hum team won Division 2 against Reef Tavern.

“I am hoping to build more teams and get it back to at least 10 teams,’’ Mr Jurie said.

He revealed Hemingways and the Yacht Club had expressed their interest in submitting teams.

An allrounder sportsman - A-grade softball and Rugby Union player in New Zealand and “good golfer’’ - Mr Jurie said he learnt his pool craft on a big table.

“I always liked snooker,’’ he said.

Interested pool players and venues were invited to express their interest with Mr Jurie and can call him on 0448 207 788.
