An ambulance and rescue helicopter at the scene of the crocodile attack.

A wounded teenage boy was this afternoon airlifted out of Cape Tribulation after reportedly being attacked by a crocodile at a beach estuary just south of the town.

Witnesses heard a boy screaming in the water and ran to help, with one of his friends reportedly grabbing the croc by the tail to save him.

The boy is believed to have been bitten three times on the hip, thigh and backside.

Locals picked him up and carried him away from the beach, then called emergency services.

A helicopter arrived to pick the boy up and rush him to hospital, according to another witness spoken to by Newsport.
