An ambulance and rescue helicopter at the scene of the crocodile attack.

A wounded teenage boy was this afternoon airlifted out of Cape Tribulation to Cairns Hospital after being attacked by a crocodile at about 3.50pm at a beach estuary near the town.

Witnesses heard a 14-year-old boy screaming in the water near where Mason Creek reaches the ocean and ran to help, with one of his friends reportedly grabbing the croc by the tail to save him.

The boy, who was reportedly fishing in waist-deep water at the time, was bitten on the hip, thigh and backside, according to one witness, while health officials confirmed with Newsport he was now in a stable condition in Cairns Hospital.

Locals picked him up and carried him away from the beach, then called emergency services.

A Queensland Ambulance Service helicopter arrived to pick the boy up and rush him to hospital, according to another witness spoken to by Newsport, arriving in Cairns at about 6.30pm.

The State Government Environment Department reports that a crocodile was spotted at Cape Tribulation Beach near Rykers Road on Wednesday, October 22.

The news comes after two boaties were last week photographed swimming in waist-deep water near the junction of Stewart Creek and the Daintree River.
