Cape York support sealed with more new road
Cape York Region Package

Another 2.6km of the Peninsula Development Road has been sealed, taking the total value of the Cape York Region Package to date to almost $600 million.
The latest section of sealed road delivered as CYRP Stage 1 and 2 projects brings the total pave and sealing projects to 80 and a combined 336km, along with two bridges on Cape York Peninsula.
Member for Cook David Kempton, who as Member from 2012 to 2015, was instrumental in securing the first stage of $260m to commence sealing the Peninsula Developmental Road (PDR) and chaired the Cape York Region Package, directing implementation.
Having lived and worked in Cape York since the 1980s, Mr Kempton said back then it was a monumental step to seal so much of the PDR in one go.
Since then, Mr Kempton has been a strong champion for the sealing of the PDR and is pleased to confirm the sealing of the road from Yarraden to Three Sisters is complete, as part of the CYPR Stage 2.
"I ensured the Cape York Region Package got off the ground. To see the package continue to be rolled out and deliver a significant social and economic boost to the region is just what the people of the Cape desperately need,’’ he said.
"Another critical section, 2.6 kilometres, of the Peninsula Developmental Road has been sealed, which is great news not only for the Cape York communities but all of Far North Queensland.
“The further sealing of the road brings the total length of seal on the road to 336 kilometres.”
This upgrade is part of the CYRP, a $323.13 million program to upgrade critical infrastructure on the Cape York Peninsula, including sealing priority sections of the Peninsula Developmental Road and priority community access roads. The Australian and Queensland governments jointly fund the project on an 80:20 basis.
Key outcomes of Stage 1 and 2 include:
• 257,916 hours of Indigenous and non-indigenous training and upskilling
• $90.8 million expended with Indigenous businesses
• $164.5 million expended with local Cape York industry participation
The Yarraden to Three Sisters (Part A, portion 1) works were undertaken by HEH Civil Pty Ltd.
