Devastation as dingo pup loses fight for life
Douglas Dingoes

Dingo advocate Luke Cooper has delivered devastating news that a young dingo pup has had to be destroyed having been injured in a trap in remote North West Cape York.
Mr Cooper, who is pushing for the protection of dingoes in Douglas Shire and across Cape York, said the dingo pup had lost its entire foot when caught in a claw trap.
“He had been this way for some time,’’ Mr Cooper said.
“In unimaginable amounts of pain. To get him seen would have been a miracle due to his very remote location.’’
But Mr Cooper and a team were able to coordinate the retrieval of the pup on October 13 for vet care.
“This poor little soul was safely flown all the way from remote North West Cape York to Cairns. He arrived around 1pm. Covered in dermestid larvae, fly strike with exposed bones and tendons,’’ Mr Cooper detailed.
“He was haemorrhaging blood from another possible infection or virus and in severe shock, Under vet care he continued to deteriorate. Sadly, due to the severity of this, he was humanely put to sleep.’’
Mr Cooper said it was an incredibly hard day for him and others who worked to try to rescue the dingo.
Referencing his push for the protection rainforest dingoes, which he says he has collected DNA of in a bit to prove their purity and importance in the region, that the “dingoes will have their time… sadly, it just wasn’t his’’.
