Port Douglas surf life savers have won more than 50 gold medals as Four Mile Beach hosted the Surf Life Saving North Queensland Branch Championships last weekend.
Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club finished second behind Cairns in the overall standings, with the carnival including five North Queensland clubs.
More than 200 competitors participated in the two-day event, with Ellis Beach coming in a narrow third, and Etty Bay and Mission Beach clubs also taking part.
The participants ranged in age from seven to 70.
Port Douglas competitors brought home 52 gold, 36 silver, and 15 bronze, as well as team and individual ribbons.
Athletes named Age Champions in their respective gender categories included Brian Markham (70–79), John Goodman (60–69), Grant Knight (50–59), Irene Knight (40–49), Marine Theiller (30–39), Elise Wright (Under 12) and Jett Harty (Under 10).
Goodman and Markham also took home the top spot in the Steve Pollard Double Ski Race.
Several juniors were selected to represent North Queensland at the Queensland State Championships on the Sunshine Coast next year - Alvie Langley, Lani Kelliher, Ruby Harty, Elise Wright, Emma Brard, and Marlee Onekawa.
Club officials said the carnival was a “celebration of community, teamwork, and surf life-saving spirit”, highlighting Port Douglas's ongoing impact in North Queensland’s life-saving scene.
