Port Douglas’ own Bruce Ferguson has reached a remarkable milestone: 300,000 containers collected for local causes. The 84-year-old continues to turn his weekly rounds into a force for good, gathering around 3,000 containers each trip.

Back in June, Bruce hit the 250,000 mark, but he was determined to keep going.

Every day, Bruce spends four to five hours making his rounds through town, often diving into wheelie bins at local resorts.

Over the years, he has become something of a local celebrity, admired not just for his dedication but for the tangible difference his efforts make.

The funds he raises go toward upgrades at the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre, including improvements to the maintenance shed.

When he is not diving into wheelie bins, locals may have spotted him volunteering at the Neighbourhood Centre, helping to store and sort donations from OzHarvest, or attending the Men’s Breakfast, a weekly community gathering.

He also funds the monthly dinners for the Men’s Breakfast crew, with the most recent held at Rattle and Hum.

Bruce turns what others see as waste into support for the community.

“It’s simple really,” Bruce said. “If you’ve got the time, and you see a way to help, why not?”
