SPORT DIGEST: AFL Cairns Coach of the Year no longer leading the Crocs
Around the grounds
The Port Douglas Crocs have advertised for a new coach next season, but mystery still surrounds why the current AFL Cairns Coach of the Year is no longer at the helm of the club.
Outgoing coach Nick Salter says he is still “trying to get answers” about why he has been let go by the club, while there is expected to be an official statement from the Crocs released later this week.
Salter, who took Port Douglas to the minor premiership - including 13 wins in a row - but missed out on the Grand Final, said yesterday he had been told by club management he would not be the senior coach next year.
He said he still loved the Crocs, and had plenty of friends there, so did not want to “bag” the club before the full details of the situation were released to the public.
Salter said he was not going to move away from the area, but would “sit out for a little bit” from AFL.
“I’m pretty busy at work,” he said.
“I need a bit of a break (from footy).”
Salter did not attend the club's presentation night late last month, with club representatives saying at the time he was on holiday in Bali.
Newsport has reached out to the club for comment.
Cricket Far North
The Port Douglas Muddies’ cricket team has continued its positive start to the season with a comfortable win against Cairns Rovers in the third grade Far North Cricket competition.
After losing the toss and bowling, the Muddies worked their on top early thanks to some tight bowling by openers Jackson Hopkinss and Cam Williams.
Rovers opener Liam Devietti was looking comfortable until Brad Case pulled off a top catch in close from the first ball of captain Adrian Bannerman’s spell, sparking a rapid fall of wickets.
The only possible resistance came from a brief cameo by number 10 batsman Agiapal Singh, but Rovers were soon dismissed for 93 in the 31st over.
Case and Bannerman were the best of the bowlers, with three wickets each.
The Muddies chased down the runs easily with three wickets down.
Case also starred with the bat, finishing on 26no.
In the fourth grade competition, the Muddies lost to Atherton.
Bowling first, Port Douglas dismissed the opposition for 130, but were all out for 63 in reply.
