The Port Douglas Muddies Third Grade cricket side was outclassed at home on Saturday by a disciplined Barron River outfit in Cricket Far North action.

After losing the toss, the Muddies bowled, with Barron getting off to a fast start on a quick outfield.

But the Muddies bowlers did not give up, and the fielders caught most of their catches this week, to help limit Barron River to 9/186 in their 35 overs.

Nathan King took 3/33 in seven overs and spinner Keel Sorensen took 3/41 with his seven.

With the bat, a promising third-wicket partnership between Andy Fenwick (33) and Kenny Nyko (31) kept the Muddies in the game, but the side dropped away after that as the run rate started to rise.

Port Douglas finished on 121 all out in the 33rd over.

This week the side faces one of the two Mulgrave teams at home on Saturday from 1pm.

The Fourth Grade team batted first at Mulgrave, and was dismissed for 80 in the 31st over, Zack Faulkner top scoring with 20.

Mulgrave chased the total down in the 19th over with one wicket down.

That team plays at home this Sunday from 1pm against Norths.

The Port Douglas Crocs have been busy re-signing players for the 2026 season, including young gun Zayne Moore, former Adelaide Crow Jared Petrenko and seven-time premiership player Brett Mckeown.

Other players to put pen to paper include Josh Lea and Danny Davidson.

For the women’s team, 2025 captain Caity McPhee, runner-up best-and-fairest Luca Roulstone and the hard-running Bek Shepherdson have all signed on again.

Boxing

There will be a packed program at the Port Douglas Fight Night this Saturday at the Port Douglas Sporting Complex.

The main event is a welterweight clash between Uten Chanavon and Josh Harris, while the main amateur bout is a middleweight match-up between Jake Gepp and Maddax Walpole-Bennett.

The action starts at about 6pm.
