Community celebrates International Volunteer Day with gratitude and stories of impact
CELEBRATING CHANGEMAKERS

The celebration included inspiring stories from volunteers like Ramesh and Sunil, who shared their experiences in the traditional harvest and the joy of bringing music to seniors at Kubirri Aged Care.
"In our retirement, committing time to the community has become indispensable for us," remarked Ramesh. “We've cultivated a robust bond with a community that shares similar values. Remaining people-oriented, we actively participate in the Uniting Church and dedicate time at Saint Mary's by the sea.
Sunil added, “Our contribution extends to the community through music. Today, we brought some Christmas cheer to the residents at Kubirri Aged Care. Ramesh plays the beatbox, and I strum the ukulele. The seniors adore it; music undeniably has a positive impact on their well-being.”
Another local, Lyne, is heavily involved with the Douglas Shire Historical Society. She derives satisfaction from preserving the history of Port Douglas, ensuring its vibrancy for both visitors and locals alike. According to Lyne, "It's crucial to emphasise the significance of Port Douglas and its rich history."

Dusty, who has a part time job, generously devotes his free time not only to the Historical Society but also as a volunteer with The Low Isles Preservation Society (LIPS). His volunteer efforts are quite unique as it includes conducting a vital pigeon count on Low Isles twice a year.
Highlighting the significance of their conservation efforts, Dusty explained, "In the 1970s, these pigeons faced significant hunting, leading to a drastic decline in their population. Nowadays, our focus is on understanding their behaviour.”
Vivienne Ruffles, President of CWA, shared insights into their monumental 100-year milestone, knitting initiatives, and the community's dedication to supporting various causes. "Our purpose extends beyond selling items; we channel our efforts into sending them to shelters and units across Australia. It's a truly amazing endeavour."
“I find a great sense of fulfilment and usefulness in my volunteer work. The best part is that I only engage in what I genuinely enjoy.
“The organisation feels like a close-knit family, and even though I have my own family here, I've become a surrogate mama to other people who have relocated. It's a lovely dynamic.”
