With our Shire being a number one tropical tourist destination, local hotels, resorts and accommodation providers play an essential role in our community. Every week Newsport keeps you up-to-date on what’s happening in our local tourism industry.

SILKY OAKS LODGE AMONG WORLD’S BEST

That Silky Oak’s recent splendid $14.7 million renovation is paying off, proves as the luxury lodge has been put on a list of best hotel stays around the world.

In an end-to-2022 wrap, American digital lifestyle magazine ‘Departures’, put together its list of best hotel stays around the world.

Editor Alex Frank stayed at Silky Oaks Lodge earlier last year and noted that the lodge’s “sumptuous furnishings blended seamlessly with the lush jungle surroundings”, and that walking between the treetops left him feeling like he was in an “enduring magic hour” he never wanted to leave.

DAINTREE WILDERNESS LODGE GOES GREEN

Changing tourist behaviour to help the environment.

That is the aim of a Griffith University project in which the Daintree Wilderness lodge is currently being involved.

The team at the lodge is passionate and committed to prioritising sustainability in the travel industry.

The ‘My Green Butler Project’ is being executed by Griffith University to see how providing guests with eco-feedback can reduce their resource usage.

This is done by a smart device, ‘My Green Butler’, that aims to help guests change their behaviour by showing statistics such as average power consumption across a property – and by giving them useful advice and tools to encourage conservation.

A FRESH START FOR SILKARI LAGOONS

Another big refurbishment in 2022 happened at Silkari Lagoons Port Douglas.

The resort closed in February 2022 and completed a $230K refurbishment of their poolside and gardens.

The refurbishment included the total renewal of the existing poolside gardens which includes new tropical plants, the redesign and renewal of the poolside outdoor spaces including pathways and sun lounge areas.

To make it all complete, the resort saw the addition of stepping stones and new bollard and up-lighting to make this all look stunning during the tropical evenings.

BRITISH TRADITIONS AT THE SHERATON

A new concept, introduced in the course of 2022 at Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort Port Douglas is gaining popularity.

At the weekly Friday afternoon‘ Taste of the Tropics Grand High Tea’ a longstanding grand tradition of high tea comes alive at the resort with sandwiches and sweet treats served with cold bubbles and hot tea.

With a tropical take on the classic British meal, Executive Chef Belinda Tuckwell, has created a high tea menu inspired by the abundant fresh local produce from finest farms in the region.
