A loss on the weekend has halted the momentum of the Muddies Third Grade cricket team.

On Saturday, the team travelled to Cairns to play the Bhutanese Rovers at Endeavour Park.

Winning the toss and bowling, the muddies conceded 6/164 in their 35 overs, with Alex Cook the only multiple wicket taker.

Spinner Cam Adam bowled his usual tight spell, taking 1/19 from seven overs.

With the bat, the Muddies failed to fire, and were dismissed for 87 in the 29th over.

Extras top scored with 21.

This Saturday, the Thirds play Barron River at Crathern Park in Trinity Beach from 1pm.

The Fourth Grade side had a victory against Barron River.

After winning the toss and batting, the Muddies struggled a bit early, but some late hitting from Kal Zahnow (36 not out) added respectability to the score, with the team finishing up on 135.

Some early wickets put Barron on the back foot, and handy breakthroughs from youngster Bryson Collins (five wickets) had them dismissed for 126 with about eight overs to go.

This Sunday the Fourths take on Mulgrave at Port Douglas oval from 12.30pm.

Junior rugby union

Douglas Shire junior rugby player Blair Zahnow has made the Far North Queensland Storm Under-15 Development Squad.

The young prop, who plays for Barron Trinity Bulls, made the squad after performing strongly in the Under-15 club season.

The 35-player squad, which is preparing for the 2026 Peninsula Union trials, was selected in partnership with Blacked Out Rugby Academy Cairns.
