The year that was captured by Newsport
Newsport Daily Print
Our last big print edition of the year is out on the streets now and, as always, it is FREE for our fabulous Newsport community.
And what a big year it has been for the Douglas Shire and surrounds.
All of the big stories and events from across 2025 have been captured in a wrap of the year that was, which included a Federal Election, the end of an era for our sugar cane growers and a much talked about Splash Park in Port Douglas.
Some of the biggest stories of the year have only just had their final outcomes, though, with crocodiles and calls for a cull still making news, this time with plans to remove crocs from Mareeba waters; while the final chapter in the desperately sad story of the murder of Toyah Cordingley in 2018 at Wangetti has been written, Innisfail nurse Rajwinder Singh sentenced to 25 years in prison for the crime.
But it is not just about the big news items for Newsport, with the little things, and the hopes and dreams our our youngsters - at least what they want for Christmas - making the cut in this last edition of the year.
There’s talk of a Convention Centre for Port Douglas as a record has been set for the lease of a Port Douglas hotel, $5.8 million for the Peninsula Boutique Hotel in signs of a tourism surge as the town hits the top 10 of destinations in the world.
There’s seasons greetings from our leaders and businesses and a Santa sack full of your comments, letters, social pics and sports news to consume over the holiday break.
