More child-care places may be on the way for Mossman parents

A new child care centre is set to be built in the heart of Mossman.
Mossman Uniting Church has drawn up plans to construct the 60-place Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) centre on its about 2000sq m property between Mossman’s two state schools on Front Street.
The centre will target 6-12-year-old children, with the primary school next door in a prime location for parents to take advantage of the OSHC services.
The Church is set to remain where it is, but will be extended, and the current hall will either be demolished or relocated, with a new hall set to be built.
A new foyer, meeting rooms, kitchens, 2m sound-proofing fencing and a playground are all part of the plans, which were lodged with Douglas Shire Council this month.
Church officials say the new development will be designed to fit in with the character of the town.
“The proposed development will not impact on the cane tram line along Mill Street, the important vista to Mount Beaufort, or the sugar mill chimney, all of which remain intact and unaffected,” the report states.
“These unique heritage elements of Mossman’s “sugar town” character are preserved.
“The scale and design of the new buildings are modest and low-rise, ensuring that views of the surrounding mountain ranges from Front Street are maintained.”
The proposed development is located at 36 Front Street, Mossman.
