Incredible photos of a mimic octopus disguising itself as a mud crab to catch a meal have been snapped by a Great Barrier Reef diver.

Underwater photographer Allie McPeterson captured the images of the amazing natural phenomena at Agincourt Reef off the Far North Queensland coast yesterday and immediately sent them to Newsport.

The mimic octopus species, found in the Indo-Pacific region, is well known for impersonating other animals.

And meanwhile, in related news, the team at Newsport would like to wish all of our valued readers a happy April Fools' Day!!!

(And that photo is also AI generated.)
