Driver jumps ship after getting that sinking feeling

An abandoned four-wheel drive car buried almost up to its windscreen has been dug out of the sand by Douglas Shire Council and Queensland National Parks workers after sitting on the beach for four days.
The wrecked land cruiser was left at the northern end of Newell Beach by an unknown driver.
A council spokesperson posted a warning online about beach users acting responsibly to help look after our natural assets following the removal operation.
“The images captured during the recovery show just how quickly coastal environments can shift - in only four days, natural sand movement had already swallowed a significant portion of the vehicle,” the spokesperson said.
“Incidents like this highlight how easily coastal environments can be impacted and why responsible beach use is so important.”
Meanwhile, one Newsport reader has likely discovered the last few remains of a different abandoned car which has been buried for several decades in the sand off Four Mile Beach.
Following an appeal by Newsport to help find the old wreck, which locals say has been there more than 30 years, a reader going by the name of Ticklemetyra Kayser posted a photo of what appears to be the last remnants of the old car, which they said they spotted in early August.
Another reader posted on Newsport’s Facebook page the GPS coordinates of where the wreckage sits off the coast out from the region where the Palmer golf course is located.
