Local backing expands Port Douglas living coral ark

The Forever Reef Project in Port Douglas has taken another major step forward in its mission to safeguard the coral species of the Great Barrier Reef, unveiling a brand-new coral tank proudly sponsored in part by Newsport.

This new tank is a direct reflection of local backing, with Newsport joining a growing network of regional businesses, volunteers, and supporters investing in the reef’s future.

Unlike standard aquariums, raceway tanks are long systems designed to generate a continuous, gentle flow of water.

By closely mimicking natural reef currents and sunlight, these specialized systems keep delicate coral fragments are healthy and thriving.

For the biobank, adding another raceway expands its holding capacity, giving the team essential space to house, observe, and care for more live specimens brought back from

offshore research expeditions. 

This tank is also optimised for tourism experiences, keeping children and those with special needs in mind. 

"These state of the art custom tanks allow visitors to see larger coral specimens, as well as a host of fish and invertebrate helpers to enhance their education and conservation understanding" says Dr Dean Miller, Founder of the Forever Reef Project.

The expansion comes at an exciting time for the project, which recently passed a major milestone by successfully collecting and maintaining over 200 of the Great Barrier Reef’s 415 known hard coral species.

As an independent Australian charity, Great Barrier Reef Legacy receives no ongoing operational government funding. 

Every research expedition, educational program, and living coral tank exists solely through grants, corporate sponsorships, and grass-roots community generosity.
