Two local volunteers have been honoured for giving a total of 47 years of service to aged care housing in the Douglas Shire. Jo Dau and Brian Roberts were awarded Life Memberships of the Douglas Shire Aged Persons Home Inc. during a special morning tea at the Kuburri Residential Care Centre in Mossman.

For decades, the pair worked tirelessly behind the scenes on the committee to make life better for residents at Alchera Homes in South Mossman and Port Haven Units in Port Douglas.

Jo joined the Douglas Shire Aged Persons Home Inc. committee in 1998 and gave 28 years of dedicated service, including several years as President, before stepping down this year.

She also holds deep knowledge of the group's history, sharing how the RAOB organisation - locally known as the "Buffs" club- built the very first four housing units on Alchera Drive.

Brian joined the committee in 2007 and served faithfully for 19 years before health issues forced him to step down.

To mark their massive contribution, current committee members presented both Jo and Brian with official Life Membership certificates.

New volunteers needed

With current committee members getting older, the Douglas Shire Aged Persons Home Inc. is now looking for fresh faces to step up and keep this vital community service running.

If you would like to join the committee and help look after local seniors, please call the Housing Manager on 0458 939 117 or talk to any current committee member today.
