Up to a dozen fireys in two trucks have extinguished a blaze at the Port Douglas Backpacker’s on Warner Street.

The firemen used multiple hoses to put out the blaze in less than an hour, which was in the roof of the building.

Witnesses said the fire was caused by an electrical fault connected to the solar panels, which caused the roof to catch alight.

Smoke was seen near the roof, but it was difficult to see the flames from in front of the building.

Sirens were ringing out as about 30 backpackers were milling around on Warner Street after being evacuated from the building, along with about 20 witnesses, police and other emergency personel.

Police had the street cordoned off from in front of the building through to Owen Street.

An electrician is currently in the roof of the building trying to secure the wiring, according to witnesses.
