Far North Queensland commuters are being urged not to attempt to cross flooded rivers and creeks following ongoing heavy rains across the region.

Bushy Creek Bridge near Mount Molloy was underwater at 7am this morning, but the water has been receding, and the Wenlock River near the Moreton Telegraph Station and at Portland Road at Cape York is flooded across the roads.

Water is over the road at the Hann River and also the Peninsular Development Road across the Laura River.

The Laura River road safety camera had been out of action since late last year, with nearby station owner Niki Ruker calling for its reinstatement earlier this month.

“Locals need these issues fixed!” she said.

On Friday, FNQ resident Jeff Madsen published a letter online from Cook MP David Kempton about the Laura River camera.

“I am pleased to advise these works are completed on Friday 16 January,” Mr Kempton wrote of the Laura River camera.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads acknowledges the flood monitoring camera at Laura River has not been working at a level the community would expect,” Mr Kempton wrote.

Mr Kempton said at the time the Morehead River camera was, however, still out of action, but that camera now appears to be working.

“In respect to Morehead River, this flood monitoring camera was installed by Cook Shire Council under Queensland Reconstruction Authority disaster funding.

“Responsibility for the camera is currently being transferred from the council to TMR,” he stated.
